Kybella

What is Kybella?

Destroying excess fat with an injection sounds like a dream come true. Kybella  is designed to do just that, but it’s still important to have realistic expectations. Kybella can’t treat large areas like your stomach or thighs yet, and many people end up needing four to six treatments to get the results they want.

Kybella works by killing fat cells with a synthetic form of an acid found in our GI tract. Because it directly targets the fat cells in the area it’s injected in, it’s best for small areas. Technically it’s only approved by the FDA to reduce your double chin, but many doctors are safely using it off-label to treat other small pockets of fat.

Is Kybella right for me?

Kybella might be a good choice if you are:

  • looking to reduce fat in a small area, especially a double chin
  • relatively young, with good skin tone and not much excess skin (which could get droopy once the fat’s gone)
  • not expecting the kind of dramatic improvement a more invasive treatment like liposuction could give you
  • willing to hide some moderate to severe swelling for up to a few weeks after your treatment

You’ll also have to keep in mind that most patients need up to six Kybella treatments, six to eight weeks apart. So you may not start seeing the results you want for several months.

The biggest thing to keep in mind with Kybella is that ultimately, your body decides the outcome. There’s no real way to know ahead of time what your results will be. When you choose Kybella, you need to understand that results will vary more than other procedures. It could work really well for you, but your best friend might need more treatments to get the same results.
